The John Templeton Foundation, through Duke University, funded Rumination: Necessary or disordered computation? with Joe as PI.

Rumination is usually treated as a malfunction. The project takes the opposite starting point — asking what problem repetitive negative thinking might be solving — a line of work that continued into Michael Payton’s decision-theoretic account of rumination, presented at CogSci 2025.
